Why do we get early morning headaches?
Early morning headaches are very common. There are various reasons causing early morning headaches and if you are thinking you are the only one experiencing this, then you need to think again as there are approximately 1 out of every 13 People experiences headaches early in the morning and one more study has shown that these headaches typically affect women more than men and are most frequent in people between the ages of 45 and 64.

What causes these early morning headaches??
There are various common reasons for these morning headaches. Some of them are listed below:
Migraine is a genetically inherited neurological condition. Migraine headaches don’t occur at any specific time, they can occur at any time, but it has been observed that most of the people develop such headaches during overnight or early in the morning. Migraine headaches affect more than 10% of people worldwide.
Migraine headaches differs in Normal headache if you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
- If you feel nauseous.
- If you feel pain around eyes or your vision is affected.
- If you become sensitive to certain smells, sound, lights etc.
Migraines often starts as normal headaches but gradually grow more severe in pain intensity. One of the main reasons of migraine issues is deprived sleep or any kind of sleep disorders.
- Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a condition which causes people to repeatedly stop breathing during their sleep, as their throat muscles partially collapse. This condition causes no. of health issues like dry mouth, snoring, pauses in breathing etc. including causing you to wake up with a headache.
Usually what happens as it causes breaks in breathing, which results in lack of oxygen leading to increased pressure in the head that causes a severe headache.
This is sometimes also called as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Insomnia is also one of the common reasons for causing headaches early in the morning. It is a type of sleep disorder which makes a person hard to sleep, or difficult to stay asleep or wake up frequently in between the sleep degrading one’s quality of sleep and causing these early morning headaches.
Insomnia is usually caused by poor sleeping habits, irregular sleep pattern, anxiety, depression, physical illnesses and pain, mental health, medications, neurological problems, lack of exercises and an unhealthy lifestyle and other sleep disorders.
- Teeth Grinding
Some people have the habit of holding their teeth tight or grinding their teeth during sleep, causing a kind of tension in your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ), which connect your lower jaw to your skull through ear, leading to a severe headache.
This tight and excessive movement also leads to muscle pain, tooth wear, and gum damage causing extra tension in jaw, leading to headache.
Drinking alcohol or any such related drinks heavily during evening also result in severe headache in the morning. Drinking alcohol effects sleep and can lead to early morning headaches because alcohol has an effect on several neurotransmitters in your brain which are associated with headaches.
Alcohol also increases urination, which causes loss of fluids, leading to mild dehydration in your body and one of the common side effect of dehydration are headaches. It also causes your blood vessels to expand, which again can lead to headaches.
